Early Life
Zhang Yiming was born on April 1, 1983, in Longyan, Fujian, China. His parents were civil servants, and he was their only child. In 2001, he enrolled at Nankai University in Tianjin, where he studied microelectronics engineering and software engineering, graduating in 2005 with a BEng in computer engineering. During his university years, he met his wife.
Rise to Success
After graduating, Zhang began his career at Kuxun, a travel website, becoming its technical director. In 2008, he briefly joined Microsoft before leaving to join the startup Fanfou. In 2009, he started his first company, 99fang.com, a real estate search engine. The pivotal moment came in 2012 when Zhang founded ByteDance with Liang Rubo. ByteDance developed the news aggregator Toutiao and the video-sharing platform Douyin, known internationally as TikTok. The success of TikTok propelled Zhang to global recognition and wealth.
