Rafael del Pino Calvo-Sotelo was born in Madrid in 1958. He is the son of Rafael del Pino y Moreno, the founder of Ferrovial. Del Pino studied Civil Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, graduating in 1981. He furthered his education by earning an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management in 1986.

Del Pino's career has been closely tied to Ferrovial. He served as the company's CEO from 1992 to 1999. In 2000, he became the Chairman of Ferrovial, succeeding his father.
