Early Life
Juan Roig Alfonso was born in Valencia, Spain, on October 8, 1949. He came from a family that owned a chain of butcher shops, which were later converted into grocery stores. Roig studied economics at the University of Valencia and later completed a postgraduate degree at IESE Business School. His early life and education laid the foundation for his future success in the retail sector.
Rise to Success
In 1981, Juan Roig, along with his siblings and wife Hortensia Herrero, acquired Mercadona from his parents. He then transformed the family business into a leading supermarket chain. Under his leadership, Mercadona implemented several innovative strategies, including the adoption of barcode scanners, automated distribution facilities, and an "always low prices" strategy. Roig's focus on customer satisfaction and employee welfare has been critical to Mercadona's growth, solidifying its position in the Spanish market. By 2006, Mercadona had opened its 1,000th store, and now has about 1,700 locations in Spain and Portugal.
Key Business Strategies
Juan Roig's leadership has been characterized by several key business strategies. One of the most notable is his commitment to "Total Quality" management. This model prioritizes the needs of the customer, employees, and suppliers. Mercadona's focus on offering full-time contracts for all employees and sharing a significant portion of pretax profits with them is a core component of this strategy. The company's emphasis on private-label products and supply chain efficiency has also contributed to its success. Furthermore, Roig has introduced technological innovations like barcode scanners and automated distribution facilities.
Philanthropy
Juan Roig is actively involved in philanthropy, supporting various initiatives through his company, Alquería Capital, and the Fundación Trinidad Alfonso, created in 2012. Through these channels, he supports young entrepreneurs, sports, education, and social welfare.
