Early Life and Education
Jonathan Gray was born in Highland Park, Illinois, to a Jewish family. He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania in 1992 with a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Bachelor of Science from the Wharton School.
Rise to Success
Gray joined Blackstone in 1992 in the mergers and acquisitions and private equity group, later moving into the real estate division. He became co-head of the real estate group in 2005 and global head in 2011, building it into the largest commercial real estate platform in the world. Under his leadership, Blackstone's real estate division became one of its most valuable branches. In 2018, he was appointed President and Chief Operating Officer of Blackstone. He orchestrated the $26 billion buyout of Hilton Hotels in 2007.

Gray has been instrumental in expanding Blackstone's client base and assets under management, including expanding into insurance companies and individual investors. He championed investments in sectors like data centers, technology, and life sciences.
Philanthropy
Gray and his wife, Mindy, are actively involved in philanthropy. They established the Basser Research Center for BRCA at the University of Pennsylvania, focusing on cancer research. In May 2025, they announced a $125 million donation to Tel Aviv University's Faculty of Medicine.
