Early Life
Mohed Altrad's early life was marked by significant hardship. Born in 1948 in the Syrian desert to a young mother, he was raised by his grandmother after his mother's death. His father, a tribal leader, initially disowned him. Denied schooling, Altrad was destined for a life as a shepherd. However, driven by ambition, he was able to attend school. Through perseverance, he excelled academically.
Rise to Success
Altrad's path to success began when he secured a scholarship to study in France. He initially struggled with the language, but earned degrees in physics and mathematics before obtaining a Ph.D. in computer science. After working for the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company and a portable computer startup, he took a bold step by acquiring a failing scaffolding company in 1985. This marked the beginning of the Altrad Group.
Key Business Strategies
Altrad's business acumen turned the struggling scaffolding business into a global leader in the construction and industrial services sector. His key strategies involved strategic acquisitions, expanding into new markets, and fostering a strong emphasis on ethics and community involvement. The Altrad Group now operates in over 100 countries and employs a substantial workforce. His success is also credited to creating a company culture of freedom and responsibility, encouraging employees to contribute in their own way while ensuring coordination across the group.
Philanthropy
Beyond business, Altrad is known for his philanthropic endeavors. In 2015, he was named World Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst & Young, recognizing not only his business achievements but also his deep commitment to social responsibility. He emphasizes community involvement, human dignity, and a belief that business success should uplift communities and create opportunities for the marginalized.
