Early Life
Min-Liang Tan was born in Singapore on November 5, 1977. He is the youngest of four children. His parents instilled a strong value on achieving conventional success, but he pursued his passion for gaming. He attended Raffles Institution and Hwa Chong Junior College before graduating from the National University of Singapore Faculty of Law (NUS Law). He later earned a Master of Laws.
Rise to Success
Min-Liang Tan gave up a law career to start gaming devices company Razer in 2005. He co-founded Razer with Robert Krakoff. Razer's early backers include IDG-Accel, Temasek Holdings, Intel and Li Ka-shing's Horizon Ventures. The company has acquired a huge global following and sold millions of gaming laptops, mice, fitness bands, and tablets. Tan listed the firm in Hong Kong in 2017, raising $529 million. Tan expanded Razer in Asia with the acquisition of Malaysian virtual currency firm MOL Global, and tie-ups with SingTel, Lazada and China's JD.com.
Key Business Strategies
Razer focused on creating precision gaming equipment. Tan's design-driven approach and understanding of gaming culture helped Razer build a strong community and global brand identity, leading to its public listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2017. In 2022, Tan led a consortium to take Razer private, believing the company was undervalued on the market, through a deal that valued it at $3.2 billion. In an interview with Forbes last year, Tan said his long-term vision for Razer is for it to keep innovating and deepening its engagement with the gaming community.

In March 2012, Tan contributed $10,000 to the Wasteland 2 Kickstarter project. In November 2014, Tan donated $10,000 and did the Ice Bucket Challenge in an effort to raise funds for ALS. In February 2015, Tan donated £10,000 to fight Motor Neuron Disease.
