Early Life
Martin Pierre Marie Bouygues was born on May 3, 1952, in Suresnes, France. He is the son of Francis Bouygues, who founded the Bouygues Group in 1952. Unlike his elder brother, Martin did not follow a traditional academic path. He joined the family business in 1974 as a works supervisor after receiving a high school diploma.
Rise to Success
His career began with practical experience, including work on the Forum des Halles in Paris in 1976. He created Maison Bouygues, a catalog real estate business. He was appointed to Bouygues' Board of Directors in 1982 and became Chairman and CEO of Maison Bouygues in 1986. In 1989, he became Chairman and CEO of Bouygues Group, expanding the company into telecommunications with Bouygues Telecom and media with TF1 and LCI. He successfully resisted a takeover attempt by Vincent Bolloré in 1997, solidifying his position as the successor to his father.

Martin Bouygues has been instrumental in the expansion of Bouygues Group into construction, telecommunications, and media. His strategic decisions include rejecting initial bidding conditions for a UMTS license and establishing a cooperation agreement with Alstom. Under his leadership, the company’s revenues tripled between 1993 and 2013. In 2021, he became Chairman of the Bouygues Board of Directors. In 2022, Bouygues acquired Equans, becoming a world leader in energies and services. The group's sales in 2023 were approximately $60 billion.
