Early Life
Manuel B. Villar Jr. was born on December 13, 1949, in Tondo, Manila, Philippines. He grew up in a modest family; his father was a government employee, and his mother sold seafood. From a young age, Villar assisted his mother in selling shrimp and fish, instilling in him the values of hard work and perseverance. He attended Isabelo delos Reyes Elementary School, Tondo Parochial School, and Mapúa Institute of Technology. He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration and a master's degree in business administration from the University of the Philippines Diliman.
Rise to Success
Villar started his career as an accountant at Sycip, Gorres, Velayo & Co. (SGV & Co.). He also worked briefly as a financial analyst. In 1975, he ventured into construction, and delivering sand and gravel, before entering the real estate industry. Recognizing the growing demand for housing, he founded Camella Homes in 1977, focusing on affordable housing for middle-class Filipinos. This venture laid the foundation for what would become Vista Land & Lifescapes, one of the Philippines' largest integrated property developers. The company's portfolio includes residential projects, commercial spaces, malls, and retail developments. Villar's strategic focus on building integrated communities in developing areas across the country significantly boosted his wealth. He diversified his investments by founding Golden MV Holdings, which became the Philippines’ largest death care company. He also launched Vistamalls, a chain of shopping centers, and AllHome Corp., a home improvement retailer that went public in 2019.

Villar built his fortune by identifying market gaps and developing innovative solutions, particularly in affordable housing. His strategic focus on building integrated communities boosted his wealth. He expanded into retail, commercial properties, and death care services. He initiated mass housing projects through economies of scale, building over 200,000 homes. He also established Prime Water to operate and maintain water distribution systems throughout the country, and founded Golden Haven Memorial Park.
Philanthropy
Manuel Villar, through the Villar Foundation, has donated significantly to various charitable causes. In 2024, he was recognized in Forbes Asia's Heroes of Philanthropy list. He donated ₱615 million to build a church and school in Bulacan and provided land valued at ₱613 million to the Diocese of Malolos.
