Early Life
Manuel Villar was born in Tondo, Manila, a densely populated and impoverished district. He was the second of nine children. His father was a government employee and his mother was a seafood vendor. He helped his mother sell seafood to support his family and fund his education. He attended Isabelo delos Reyes Elementary School, Tondo Parochial School, Mapúa Institute of Technology, and the University of the Philippines Diliman, where he earned bachelor's and master's degrees in business administration.
Rise to Success
After graduating, Villar worked as an accountant. He then started a seafood delivery business and later entered the construction industry. He purchased trucks to haul sand and gravel. Recognizing the growing demand for housing, he founded Camella Homes in 1977, focusing on affordable housing for middle-class Filipinos. This venture became the foundation of Vista Land & Lifescapes. He also launched Golden MV Holdings and Vistamalls, a chain of shopping centers.
Key Business Strategies
Villar's key business strategy involved identifying underserved markets and meeting their needs through affordable, quality housing. He initiated mass housing projects, achieving economies of scale. Villar diversified his investments into retail, commercial properties, and death care services, securing steady revenue streams. He also expanded Vista Land, which has several subsidiaries including Brittany Corporation, Crown Asia Properties, Vista Residences, Camella, Vista Manors, Lessandra, Communities Philippines, and VLL International Inc.
