Early Life and Education
Manuel Bamba Villar Jr. was born on December 13, 1949, in Tondo, Manila, Philippines. He grew up in a modest household; his father was a government employee, and his mother sold seafood in a local market. Despite the financial hardships, Villar pursued education with determination. He earned a degree in Business Administration from the University of the Philippines – Diliman and later completed his Master's in Business Administration at the same institution.
Rise to Success
After graduating, Villar started his career as an accountant. He then started a sand and gravel delivery business in 1975. Recognizing the growing demand for housing, he founded Camella Homes in 1977, focusing on affordable housing for middle-class Filipinos. This venture laid the foundation for what would become Vista Land & Lifescapes, one of the Philippines' largest integrated property developers. By 2019, Villar was the Philippines' single wealthiest individual, with billions of dollars to his name.
Key Business Strategies
Villar's success is largely attributed to identifying underserved markets and meeting their needs with affordable, quality housing. He initiated mass housing projects to achieve economies of scale. His business portfolio has diversified to include real estate, retail, and utilities. Villar is the chairman of Vista Land & Lifescapes, which includes residential subdivisions, condominiums, supermarkets, shopping malls, healthcare facilities, and more.
