Early Life
Alexander Anatolyevich Ponomarenko was born on October 27, 1964, in Bilohirsk, Crimea, Soviet Ukraine. He served in the airborne divisions of the armed forces from 1983 to 1985. Ponomarenko was also a junior boxing champion of Ukraine in the late 1980s. He graduated from Simferopol State University with a bachelor's degree and later earned a master's from the Russian State Academy of Management.
Rise to Success
Ponomarenko's business career began in the late 1980s, founding an enterprise specializing in perfume products and building materials in Crimea with Aleksandr Skorobogatko. In 1996, the duo co-founded the Russian General Bank in Moscow. The bank was later sold to OTP Bank for $477 million in 2006. Ponomarenko acquired shares in cargo companies, which eventually formed Novorossiysk Commercial Sea Port (NCSP), becoming Russia's largest seaport. He was appointed Chairman of NCSP in 2004. Under his leadership, NCSP had an initial public offering on the London Stock Exchange in 2007, raising $955 million. In 2011, the majority stake of NCSP was sold for $2.5 billion. Ponomarenko, along with Skorobogatko and Arkady Rotenberg, won a tender to develop Sheremetyevo International Airport in 2013. He was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sheremetyevo International Airport in 2016.

Philanthropy
Ponomarenko's son, Vladimir, donated $3,500 of his earnings to buy sneakers for kids in need in Ukraine. Alexander Ponomarenko organized a GoFundMe campaign to match his son's donation.
