Early Life
Dermot Desmond was born in Macroom, County Cork, Ireland, in 1950. His family later moved to Dublin. He attended Scoil Mhuire in Marino and Good Counsel College in New Ross. After finishing school in 1968, he began his career at Citibank in Dublin.
Rise to Success
Desmond's business career began in 1968 with Citibank in Dublin, followed by a role at Price Waterhouse in Kabul, Afghanistan. In 1981, he founded National City Brokers (NCB) in Dublin, which he sold to Ulster Bank in 1994 for a reported £39 million. He then founded International Investment & Underwriting (IIU) in 1995, a private equity firm and his primary investment vehicle. IIU has invested in numerous companies across various industries. Desmond is also the largest individual shareholder of Celtic Football Club.
