Early Life
Dermot Desmond was born on August 14, 1950, in Macroom, County Cork, Ireland. He moved to Dublin with his family in 1956 and was educated at Scoil Mhuire in Marino and Good Counsel College in New Ross. Desmond began his career in 1968 at Citibank in Dublin. He later worked for the Investment Bank of Ireland and Price Waterhouse Coopers in Kabul, Afghanistan.
Rise to Success
In 1981, Desmond founded National City Brokers (NCB) in Dublin, which became the largest independent brokerage in Ireland. He sold NCB to Ulster Bank in 1994 for £39 million. Following the sale of NCB, Desmond established International Investment & Underwriting (IIU), his private equity firm. IIU has made numerous successful investments, including stakes in Daon, Mountain Province Diamonds, and Barchester Healthcare. Desmond also purchased London City Airport in 1995 and sold it in 2006.
