Early Life
Kuok Khoon Hong was born in 1949 in Mersing, Johor, Malaysia. He is a nephew of Malaysian tycoon Robert Kuok. Kuok's early education took place in Malaysia, after which he pursued a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the National University of Singapore in 1973.
Rise to Success
Kuok began his career in commodity trading at Kuok Oils and Grains. He rose through the ranks to become managing director, during which time he oversaw the development of refining complexes in Malaysia and China. In 1991, Kuok co-founded Wilmar International, partnering with Martua Sitorus. Wilmar started as a small commodities trading company, and it quickly grew into a global agribusiness. He expanded Wilmar’s reach with palm oil plantations and refineries across Indonesia, and footholds in China and India. In 2006, Wilmar was listed on the Singapore Exchange.
Key Business Strategies
Kuok's business strategy has focused on integrating the entire value chain of the agricultural commodity business. This model includes origination, processing, branding, merchandising, and distribution of a wide range of food and industrial products. He has been credited with transforming Wilmar International into a global agribusiness giant. Key strategies include aggressive expansion through acquisitions, vertical integration, and joint ventures. Sustainability is also a core principle of his business.
Philanthropy
Kuok Khoon Hong is also known for his philanthropy. In 2020, Wilmar contributed $7 million to The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund. He has also endowed scholarships and bursaries at various institutions including Magdalene College, Cambridge University, and Singapore Management University. Furthermore, he has supported educational infrastructure projects, including building schools in Indonesia and elderly care facilities in China.
