Early Life
Kuok Khoon Hong was born in 1949 in Mersing, Johor, Malaysia. He is a relative of Malaysian-Chinese billionaire Robert Kuok. His early education included Sri Mersing Primary, St. Joseph's School, and English College in Johor Bahru. He earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from McGill University in 1973.
Rise to Success
Kuok started his career at Kuok Oils and Grains. He became the managing director and developed edible oil refining complexes in Malaysia and China. In 1991, he co-founded Wilmar International with Martua Sitorus. Wilmar grew rapidly in the Indonesian edible oil market and expanded into oil palm plantations, refineries, and key markets like China and India. A significant milestone was the 2007 merger with the Kuok Group's assets, which dramatically increased Wilmar's scale.
Key Business Strategies
Kuok's leadership has been crucial in Wilmar's expansion. The company focused on vertical integration, strategic acquisitions, and expansion into emerging markets. In 2019, Wilmar began using satellites to monitor its palm oil suppliers to ensure sustainable practices.
Philanthropy
Kuok is known for his philanthropic efforts. In May 2020, he and Wilmar International donated SG$7 million to The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund. He has also funded schools, elderly homes, and orphanages in Indonesia and China. Additionally, he established scholarships and bursaries at various universities.
