John David Caudwell was born in Birmingham, England, and later raised in Stoke-on-Trent. From a young age, he showed an entrepreneurial spirit, taking on various ventures such as selling clothing and working at a car dealership. Caudwell left school at 15 and began an apprenticeship at Michelin, later gaining an HNC in mechanical engineering.
Rise to Success
Caudwell's career took a pivotal turn in the mid-1980s when he entered the mobile phone business. He co-founded Midland Mobile Phones in 1987, later expanding into the Caudwell Group, which included Phones 4u. Phones 4u became a leading mobile phone retailer in the UK, known for its fast growth. In 2003, he sold Singlepoint to Vodafone. In 2006, Caudwell sold his majority stake in Phones 4u for £1.46 billion.
