Early Life and Education
Sunil Bharti Mittal was born in Ludhiana, Punjab, India, on October 23, 1957. He came from a business-oriented family and developed an entrepreneurial spirit at a young age. He attended Wynberg Allen School in Mussoorie and Scindia School in Gwalior before earning a bachelor's degree in economics and political science from Panjab University, Chandigarh, in 1976.
Rise to Success
Mittal's career began with a small-scale manufacturing business of bicycle parts, which he started after graduating. He then expanded into wool blankets and stainless steel surgical equipment. In 1980, he shifted his base to Bombay (now Mumbai) and found success importing and distributing power generators from Japan. His pivotal move into the telecom sector came in 1992 when he successfully bid for one of the four mobile phone network licenses auctioned in India. In 1995, he launched Bharti Cellular Limited (BCL), which later became Bharti Airtel. Within a few years, Bharti became the first telecom company to cross the 2 million mobile subscriber mark.
Key Business Strategies
Mittal's key strategies involved identifying mobile telecom as a growth area and pioneering a low-cost “minutes factory” model. He focused on outsourcing network infrastructure to concentrate on sales and customer service, which significantly cut costs and enabled rapid expansion. Bharti Airtel expanded its operations across India and internationally, including entering the African market through the acquisition of Zain Telecom's African business in 2010.
Philanthropy
Sunil Mittal has a strong commitment to philanthropy through the Bharti Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Bharti Enterprises. The Foundation runs the Satya Bharti School Program, which operates schools in rural areas, providing free quality education to underprivileged children. The Foundation also supports government schools through the Quality Support Program.
