Robert Kuok

Early Life

Robert Kuok Hock Nien was born in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, on October 6, 1923. He came from a prominent Chinese family. Kuok's father, Kuok Keng Kang, emigrated from China. He was educated at Raffles Institution and English College Johore Bahru.

Rise to Success

Kuok started his career as an office boy. He later worked as a clerk in the rice-trading department of Mitsubishi Shoji Kaisha during the Japanese occupation. After World War II, he and his brothers founded Kuok Brothers Sdn Bhd in 1949, trading agricultural commodities. In 1959, Kuok formed Malayan Sugar Manufacturing Co. Bhd. and came to control 80% of the Malaysian sugar market, earning him the nickname "Sugar King of Asia". Kuok expanded his business ventures, building the first Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore in 1971. He officially retired from the Kerry Group in 1993 but continued to make investments.
