E. Joe Shoen was born in Phoenix, Arizona, on March 28, 1949. He is the son of Leonard Shoen, the founder of U-Haul. Shoen attended the College of the Holy Cross, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. He furthered his education by obtaining a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Harvard Business School. At Harvard, he wrote his thesis on self-storage businesses, a field that would later become central to his career.
Rise to Success
After graduating from Harvard, Shoen immediately joined the executive board of U-Haul. He played a key role in the company's growth. In 1986, he led a significant strategic shift by taking over leadership from his father.
