Early Life

Hui Wing Mau, also known as Xu Rongmao, was born in Shishi, Fujian, China. He grew up in modest circumstances. In the late 1970s, he moved to Hong Kong, where he started working and investing in textile factories before establishing his own in 1988.

Rise to Success

Hui Wing Mau's career took a turn when he ventured into the real estate sector. During the 1990s, he expanded his real estate business into Beijing and Shanghai. He also undertook property ventures in Australia during the same period. He founded Shimao Property Holdings Ltd. in 2001, which later became Shimao Group Holdings Ltd. The company listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (SEHK: 813) in 2006.

Shimao Group's success is attributed to a focus on integrated real estate projects in economically thriving cities. The company's strategy included the development of large-scale residential projects, hotels, and commercial buildings in prime locations. The company also focused on property investment and management, and hotel operations.

Philanthropy

Hui Wing Mau has been involved in philanthropy for over 20 years. He has led Shimao Group in donating over 1.6 billion yuan. His philanthropic efforts include the donation of the Silk Road Landscape Map to the Palace Museum in Beijing. He has also supported the China Red Ribbon Foundation for AIDS control and prevention. In addition, he founded the Hong Kong New Home Association to provide services for new immigrants and ethnic minorities.
