Early Life
Hui Wing Mau, also known as Xu Rongmao, was born in the Fujian Province of China. He grew up in modest means and graduated high school during the Cultural Revolution. After graduation, he worked in the countryside as a 'barefoot doctor'.
Rise to Success
Hui Wing Mau moved to Hong Kong in the late 1970s and worked in a textile factory. In 1988, he invested in a knitting factory which led him to real estate. Hui started investing in the development of residential complexes and resorts in Fujian. During the 1990s, he expanded his real estate business into Beijing and Shanghai. In 2001, he founded Shimao Group and, under his leadership, the company grew to be a powerhouse in the real estate industry. In 2003, Hui obtained a Master of Business Administration from the University of South Australia. He undertook several property ventures in Australia in the 1990s.

Hui's key business strategies involved identifying opportunities before others, which secured his spot at the top of the property industry. He focused on developing large-scale residential projects, hotels, and other commercial buildings in prime locations. He expanded into commercial property and hotel operations. His strategic vision and commitment to quality construction propelled Shimao Group to prominence.
Philanthropy
Hui Wing Mau is actively involved in philanthropy and community initiatives. He founded the Hong Kong New Home Association in May 2010. He supports charitable causes aimed at promoting education, healthcare, and cultural preservation in Hong Kong and mainland China. Hui led Shimao Group to donate an accumulative amount of over 1.6 billion yuan. He donated the “Silk Road Landscape Map” to Beijing's Palace Museum.
