Early Life
Hui Wing Mau, also known as Xu Rongmao, was born in 1950 in Shishi, Fujian, China. He graduated from high school during the Cultural Revolution and initially worked as a barefoot doctor. In the 1970s, he relocated to Hong Kong and worked in the textile industry.
Rise to Success
Hui's career took a pivotal turn in 1988 when he invested in a knitting factory but instead constructed a hotel, becoming the owner of China's first private three-star hotel. This marked his entry into the real estate sector. He expanded his business, developing residential complexes and resorts in Fujian, and later into Beijing and Shanghai in the 1990s. Shimao Property was listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2006.

Hui Wing Mau is known for his contrarian investment approach, often acquiring land in areas overlooked by others. This strategy allowed him to secure prime land at favorable prices, contributing significantly to his wealth. His company, Shimao Group, has over 400 projects, showcasing a diversified business approach including real estate, hospitality, and commercial ventures.

Hui Wing Mau is involved in philanthropic activities. He was the largest individual donor to the NSW branch of the Australian Labor Party in 2003-04.
