Early Life
Hubert Burda was born on February 9, 1940, in Heidelberg, Germany. He is the youngest son of Franz and Aenne Burda, the founders of the Burda publishing company. He studied art history, archaeology, and sociology at Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, earning a doctorate in art history before the age of 26.
Rise to Success
Burda joined his father's publishing house, and in 1987, he assumed the role of Chairman of the Board. Under his leadership, Burda Verlag underwent a significant transformation, expanding into a global media and technology company. He was one of the first to recognize the potential of digital media, taking steps toward digitalization as early as 1995.
Key Business Strategies
Burda's strategy focused on innovation, expansion, and recognizing digital trends. He oversaw the launch of Focus magazine, which became a commercial success. He also expanded the company's international presence. The company's revenue in 2024 was €2.737 billion, with over 400 print and digital brands.
Philanthropy
Burda is actively involved in philanthropy. In 2001, he established the Felix Burda Foundation, dedicated to colorectal cancer prevention, in memory of his son Felix. He also supports the Tribute to Bambi Foundation and the Hubert Burda Foundation.
