Hubert Burda was born on February 9, 1940, in Heidelberg, Germany. He is the youngest son of Franz and Aenne Burda, a publishing couple. Burda's career took off when he joined his father's publishing house. He became the editor-in-chief of the magazine Bunte. In 1987, he assumed the role of sole shareholder and CEO of Burda Holding.
