Early Life
George Economou was born in Athens, Greece, in 1953. His father owned a small paper-products company. Economou pursued higher education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he earned a Master of Science in naval architecture and marine engineering, and a second Master of Science in shipping and shipbuilding management. He studied at MIT for 3.5 years, completing a 7-year program.
Rise to Success
Economou began his career by becoming a shipowner, selling his New York apartment to help raise funds. He partnered with Petros Pappas to form DryTank. DryTank acquired several ships, but the partnership dissolved, and Economou retained 90% of the equity. He founded Dry Ships Inc. in 2004. Dry Ships grew to become one of the largest US-listed dry bulk companies, with a fleet of offshore ultra-deepwater drilling units, dry bulk carriers, and tankers. Economou has been involved in several key transactions, including taking DryShips public on the Nasdaq in 2005 and later taking it private again. He sold the offshore drilling firm Ocean Rig in 2018. Between August and December 2023, Economou bought large positions in four publicly-traded shipping firms in the U.S.
Key Business Strategies
Economou is known for his bold moves and unhesitating approach in the shipping industry. He has been described as an early mover, always seeking to expand his ventures. In the past, Economou has been accused of running DryShips like a private company for personal profit, leading to criticism regarding shareholder value. His fleet currently includes approximately 130 ships, spanning bulkers, tankers, and LNG carriers. He is also a serious art collector and has gifted a Peter Doig painting to the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.
