Early Life
Fernando De Leon's story is one of resilience and ambition. Born in Brownsville, Texas, in 1978, he spent his formative years in Matamoros, Mexico, crossing the border daily to attend school in the United States. This dual cultural experience gave him a unique perspective, shaping his understanding of diverse communities and business dynamics. He was the youngest of six children, and the only one born in the U.S. which granted him American citizenship.
Rise to Success
De Leon's academic achievements led him to Harvard University, where he graduated cum laude in 2001. His initial career move was as an analyst at Goldman Sachs. However, he soon ventured into real estate development, founding Leon Capital Group in 2006. He began by developing homebuilder lots and apartment buildings. Over time, Leon Capital Group evolved into a diversified holding company with assets in real estate, financial services, healthcare, and technology. He recognized the needs of growing communities and built businesses to serve them.
Key Business Strategies
De Leon's business strategy involves a 'buy-and-build' approach, investing in founder-led businesses. Leon Capital Group operates as a family holding company, taking the lead in developing and operating businesses. The company has made significant real estate investments and developed various properties, including rental housing units, industrial spaces, and retail centers. De Leon also co-founded Crexi, a digital marketplace for commercial real estate. He owns at least 70% of each subsidiary and employs a shared ownership model with the people who run the companies, offering them stakes in the business.
Philanthropy
De Leon is committed to giving back through the De Leon Family Foundation, which focuses on education in South Texas and Northern Mexico, and also works to expand access to healthcare. He also launched the De Leon Scholars Program, which awards scholarships to students in Texas. De Leon believes that building businesses is the most philanthropic act.
