Early Life
Edwin Leong Siu-hung was born in Guangdong Province, China, in either 1951 or 1952. The sixth son of Henry G. Leong, who worked for Jardine Matheson, Edwin's father passed away when he was just nine years old. As a teenager in the late 1960s, Leong traveled to Vancouver to finish high school. He went on to study computer science at the University of British Columbia and later earned a master's degree in computer science from the University of Toronto.
Rise to Success
After graduating, Leong returned to Hong Kong, where he launched his real estate venture, Tai Hung Fai Enterprise, in 1977. Initially, the company focused on property investment and management, specializing in retail properties and hotels. Under his leadership, Tai Hung Fai Enterprise grew exponentially, expanding its portfolio to include hotels, serviced apartments, retail shops, residential buildings, office buildings, and industrial buildings. Leong's strategic acumen and timing in the property market, particularly during periods of economic downturn, have been key to his success. He is known for his ability to acquire properties and redevelop them, earning him the moniker "King of Shops".
