Early Life
Roberto Hernández Ramírez was born in Tuxpan, Veracruz, Mexico, on March 24, 1942. He graduated from the Ibero-American University in 1964 with a degree in business administration. From an early age, he displayed a keen interest in business and finance.
Rise to Success
Hernández Ramírez co-founded Acciones y Valores de México (Accival) in 1971. The brokerage firm quickly rose in prominence, becoming the second most active on the trading floor, second only to Banamex. He became the youngest president of the Mexican Stock Exchange in 1974, serving until 1979. In 1991, Hernández Ramírez, along with partners from Accival, acquired Banamex, forming Grupo Financiero Banamex-Accival (Banacci). He then served as Chairman of the Board of Banamex, later Citibanamex, from 1991 until 2013 and CEO from 1997 to 2001.
Key Business Strategies
Hernández Ramírez's business acumen led to significant strategic moves, including leading the largest corporate transaction between Mexico and the United States when Banacci joined Citigroup in 2001. He served on Citigroup's board until 2009. He has also served on the board of Grupo Televisa.
Philanthropy
Hernández Ramírez is actively involved in philanthropy. He has created two foundations focused on preserving the environment and Mayan cultural heritage. He serves on the board of The Nature Conservancy. He is also co-chair of Fomento Cultural Citibanamex and Fomento Ecológico y Social Citibanamex.
