Early Life
Chris Wallin was born in 1953 in Brisbane, Australia. He grew up in Moorooka, a suburb of Brisbane, and attended Brisbane State High School where he developed an early interest in geology, rocks, and minerals. He was awarded a scholarship to the University of Queensland, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Geology.
Rise to Success
After graduating, Wallin started his career as a geologist for the Department of Mines and Energy of the Government of Queensland. During his time with the department, he discovered coal deposits throughout Queensland. In 1989, he founded QCoal with the aim of developing these deposits into operating mines. Under Wallin's leadership, QCoal has grown to operate several mines in the Bowen Basin, including the Sonoma, Drake, and Byerwen mines. QCoal was awarded the Queensland Miner of the Year Award in 2014, celebrating its commitment to the industry.
