Onkar Kanwar was born in Sialkot, British India (now in Pakistan), in March 1942. His family relocated to India during the partition. He pursued higher education in the United States, earning a degree in Science and Administration from the University of California.

Kanwar joined the family business, Apollo Tyres, in 1964. He took control of the company in 2002, after a period of family disputes. Under his leadership, Apollo Tyres has grown into a major international player, with operations spanning multiple countries, including India, Europe, and the Netherlands. Key acquisitions, such as the Dutch brand Vredestein, have contributed significantly to its global expansion.
