Early Life
Alexander Frank Beard was born on August 3, 1967, in Gravesend, Kent, England. He attended Gravesend Grammar School for Boys from 1980 to 1985. Beard then went on to study at Christ Church, Oxford University, where he graduated with an MA in Biochemistry in 1989.
Rise to Success
Beard began his career in the energy industry, joining BP as an oil trader from 1990 to 1994. In 1995, he moved to Glencore, a major commodity trading and mining company. Over two decades, he rose through the ranks, eventually becoming the CEO of Glencore's worldwide oil department in 2007. During his tenure, Glencore expanded its global oil trading business significantly.
Key Business Strategies
As CEO of Glencore's worldwide oil department, Beard oversaw strategic investments in shipping, refining, and storage assets. He also played a key role in establishing the RussNeft joint venture for production in Russia. He is now chairman and founding shareholder of Adaptogen Capital, an infrastructure firm focused on building a portfolio of storage batteries in the UK for grid stability.
Philanthropy
Beard is involved in philanthropy, supporting various charitable causes. He is a donor to the Royal Marsden Oak Cancer Centre and joined the board of trustees for Shakespeare's Globe in London in 2017.
