Early Life and Education
Wolfgang Leitner was born on March 27, 1953, in Graz, Austria. He grew up in a modest, lower-middle-class family. His father worked as a metal worker at Andritz AG for three decades, which provided Leitner an early exposure to the engineering and manufacturing environment. Leitner received a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Graz in 1978. His academic background laid the foundation for his later career in engineering and business management.
Rise to Success
Leitner's career began as a research chemist at Vianova, an Austrian subsidiary of Hoechst AG, from 1978 to 1981. He then worked as a management consultant for McKinsey & Company from 1981 to 1985. In 1986, Leitner co-founded Genericon Pharma. In 1987, he joined Andritz AG as Chief Financial Officer and became CEO in 1994. Leitner acquired a 26% stake in Andritz in 1999 and transformed the company into a global leader through strategic acquisitions, including the $833 million purchase of Xerium Technologies in 2018. In 2021, he transitioned from CEO to Chairman of the Board.
