Early Life
Semahat Sevim Arsel was born in Ankara, Turkey, on September 8, 1928. She is the eldest child of Vehbi Koç, the founder of Koç Holding, and Sadberk Koç. She graduated from the American College for Girls in Istanbul. Growing up, Arsel and her brother Rahmi Koç were raised by Austrian and German nannies. Her early experiences, including an extended childhood illness, fueled her later commitment to healthcare and education.
Rise to Success
Arsel began her business career in 1964 as a member of the Board of Directors of Koç Holding, a position she continues to hold. She has been instrumental in the strategic direction and growth of the Koç Group, a major player in the Turkish economy, with interests in energy, automotive, finance, and consumer goods. She is also the chairman of Koç Holding's tourism company, Setur.

She is also the chairperson of the Vehbi Koç Foundation, through which she has supported numerous initiatives. Arsel is the founder of the Semahat Arsel Nursing Education and Research Center (SANERC). Additionally, she co-founded the Turkey Education Volunteers Foundation (TEGV).
