Early Life
Hamdi Ulukaya was born in 1972 in İliç, Erzincan Province, Turkey, to a Kurdish dairy-farming family. Growing up, he was involved in the family business, which involved raising sheep. He later studied political science at Ankara University before immigrating to the United States in 1994 to study English.
Rise to Success
In 2005, Ulukaya purchased a defunct yogurt factory in South Edmeston, New York, with a loan from the Small Business Administration. He spent 18 months perfecting his yogurt recipe, inspired by his heritage. In 2007, he launched Chobani Greek Yogurt, which quickly gained popularity for its thick texture and high protein content. The company experienced rapid growth, becoming the top-selling Greek yogurt brand in the U.S. by 2011.

Ulukaya's success can be attributed to several key strategies. He used innovative marketing, such as in-store samples and social media, to grow the Chobani brand. Chobani also focused on quality and built its own facilities. Ulukaya also implemented employee-first policies, including profit-sharing and paid parental leave.
Philanthropy
Hamdi Ulukaya is known for his philanthropic efforts. He signed The Giving Pledge, committing to donate the majority of his wealth. He founded the Tent Partnership for Refugees in 2016, a global initiative that helps businesses hire and support refugees.
