Early Life
Ronnie Screwvala was born as Rohinton Soli Screwvala in Mumbai, India, on September 8, 1956, into a Parsi family. He attended the Cathedral and John Connon School and later Sydenham College. In his early years, Screwvala showed a keen interest in theatre, participating in professional plays with Bombay theatre. He played notable roles in Shakespeare's Othello and Death of a Salesman.
Rise to Success
Screwvala's entrepreneurial journey began in 1981 when he pioneered cable television in India, at a time when only one terrestrial channel, Doordarshan, was available. In 1990, he co-founded UTV Software Communications, which evolved into a major media and entertainment company. UTV produced popular TV shows and films, partnering with global companies. In 2012, he sold his stake in UTV to The Walt Disney Company for approximately $1.4 billion.

Screwvala, along with his wife Zarina Mehta, founded The Swades Foundation, dedicated to lifting people out of poverty in rural India. In 2024, Swades Foundation raised ₹10 crore (approx. $1.2 million USD) through the Social Stock Exchange.
