Early Life
Ronnie Screwvala was born Rohinton Soli Screwvala on September 8, 1956, in Bombay (now Mumbai), India. He attended Cathedral and John Connon School and Sydenham College. His father was an executive, which led to a shift in the family's socioeconomic status. This change influenced his education, leading him to a more established school. From a young age, Screwvala showed an entrepreneurial spirit, starting his first business with a toothbrush manufacturing company.
Rise to Success
Screwvala's career began in 1981 when he pioneered cable television in India, a significant move at a time when Doordarshan was the only terrestrial channel. In 1990, he co-founded UTV along with his wife, Zarina, and Deven Khote, which became the first independent production house in the Indian entertainment industry. UTV expanded into a media conglomerate, partnering with major companies like News Corp and Disney. In 2012, he divested UTV to Disney for $1.4 billion. Following his entrepreneurial ventures, Screwvala re-entered the media content industry with RSVP Movies.
