Robert Warren Miller was born in Quincy, Massachusetts, U.S. on May 23, 1933. His upbringing provided him with the foundations for his future success. Miller graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Hotel Administration in 1955.
Rise to Success
In 1960, Miller co-founded DFS (Duty Free Shoppers) with Chuck Feeney. DFS quickly gained prominence by securing exclusive concessions for duty-free sales in Hawaii and Hong Kong. Under Miller's leadership, DFS expanded to become the world's largest travel retailer. In 1996, Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy (LVMH) acquired Feeney's interests in DFS for $1.63 billion. Miller retained a significant minority shareholding (38%) in the company.
Key Business Strategies
Miller's success can be attributed to several key strategies. Securing exclusive concessions in strategic locations like Hawaii and Hong Kong was crucial. Targeting the affluent, particularly the emerging economic elite of mainland China, was also a key move. Expanding beyond airport stores into downtown Galleria stores allowed for broader market penetration. Furthermore, Miller founded Search Investment Group Ltd in 1973, showcasing his investment acumen.
