Robert Martin Friedland was born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 18, 1950. He is the eldest of three children born to immigrant parents. His father survived the Auschwitz concentration camp, and his mother worked as a forced laborer during the Holocaust. Friedland graduated from Reed College in Oregon in 1974 with a degree in political science. He was student body president during his senior year.
Rise to Success
Friedland's career in the mining industry began in the 1980s. He founded Galactic Resources Ltd. and later established Ivanhoe Capital Corporation and Ivanhoe Mines. His most notable achievement includes discovering the Voisey's Bay nickel-copper-cobalt deposit in Canada, which he sold for $4.3 billion. He also led the discovery of the Oyu Tolgoi copper-gold mine in Mongolia. Friedland has been inducted into the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame (2016) and the American Mining Hall of Fame (2021). He is praised for finding profitable mines in remote areas like Oyu Tolgoi in Mongolia.
