Early Life
Robert Martin Friedland was born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 18, 1950, to parents who were Holocaust survivors. His early life was marked by a strong work ethic and a rebellious spirit. He attended Bowdoin College but resigned in 1970. Later, he graduated from Reed College in 1974 with a degree in political science, serving as student body president during his senior year.
Rise to Success
Friedland's career in the mining industry began in the 1980s. He founded Galactic Resources Ltd., where he raised over $300 million to establish a gold mine. However, the use of heap leaching technology led to environmental damage and bankruptcy. His most significant achievement came in 1994 when he founded Indochina Goldfields, later renamed Ivanhoe Mines. Ivanhoe Mines discovered significant copper, gold, and silver deposits, notably at Oyu Tolgoi in Mongolia. He has been inducted into both the Canadian and American Mining Halls of Fame.
