Early Life and Education
Pierre Karl Péladeau was born on October 16, 1961, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He is the son of Pierre Péladeau, the founder of Quebecor, and Raymonde Chopin. He attended Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf and pursued higher education in both Montreal and Paris. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy from the Université du Québec à Montréal and a law degree from Université de Montréal.
Career at Quebecor
Péladeau joined Quebecor in 1985, and his career became instrumental in the company's growth. He spearheaded the acquisition of Sun Media Corporation in 1998, making Quebecor the second-largest newspaper chain in Canada. In 1999, he was appointed President and CEO of Quebecor Inc.. Under his leadership, Quebecor acquired Videotron Group in 2000, expanding into cable and telecommunications. He oversaw the creation of Quebecor Media, consolidating the company's media properties. Péladeau stepped down as CEO in 2013, but returned to the role in 2017.
Political Career
In 2014, Péladeau entered politics, winning a seat in the Quebec National Assembly as a member of the Parti Québécois. He was elected leader of the Parti Québécois on May 15, 2015. However, he resigned from his political roles in May 2016, citing family reasons.
Business Ventures and Philanthropy
After returning to Quebecor, he acquired Freedom Mobile in April 2023, expanding the company's reach outside of Quebec. Péladeau has also been involved in sports, purchasing the Montreal Alouettes in 2023. Péladeau also has engaged in philanthropy and has contributed to various charitable causes.
