Early Life and Education
Peter Lim was born in Singapore in May 1953. He grew up in the Bukit Ho Swee public housing estate with his seven siblings, the son of a fishmonger. Lim attended Raffles Institution for his secondary education. After National Service, he pursued a degree in accounting and finance at the University of Western Australia, funding his studies with part-time jobs such as a taxi driver, cook, and waiter.
Rise to Success
Lim began his career in the 1980s as a stockbroker, where he became known as the "Remisier King" due to his success with Indonesian clients. He later transitioned into private investing, making significant returns. In the early 1990s, he invested in the palm oil company Wilmar, which became a key source of his wealth. In 2010, he sold his Wilmar shares for approximately $1.5 billion.
Key Business Strategies
Lim's investment strategy has been characterized by a long-term perspective and a focus on sectors with strong growth potential. He diversified his portfolio into healthcare, property, and sports. A major move was acquiring a controlling stake in Valencia CF in 2014. He also invested in Thomson Medical Group and TMC Life Sciences. More recently, he is expanding the Wellington College campuses across Southeast Asia.
Philanthropy
Peter Lim is involved in various philanthropic efforts, primarily through the Lim Family Foundation. He has donated over S$60 million to education and sports initiatives. This includes the Singapore Olympic Foundation – Peter Lim Scholarship and the NParks – Peter Lim Scholarship, supporting young athletes and students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds. He has also supported community projects and healthcare initiatives.
