Early Life
Nikolai Buinov was born on June 19, 1967, in Krasnoyarsk, Russia. He grew up in a family of entrepreneurs, which influenced his career path. Buinov graduated from St. Petersburg State Transport University in 1990 with a degree in Civil Engineering.
Rise to Success
Buinov's career began in 1993 at a timber company. In 1995, he co-founded Bodaibo Energy with his father, supplying fuel and lubricants to gold miners in Siberia. In 1997, Buinov purchased an oil field license, which led to the creation of Irkutsk Oil Company (INK). He co-founded INK with his father and Boris Sinyavsky in 2000. He became President of INK in 2011 and Chairman of the board in January 2022. In 2022, Goldman Sachs sold its stake in IOC to Buinov and his partners.
Key Business Strategies
A key strategy for Buinov has been to increase oil production. INK announced plans to increase crude oil production to 8.5 million tons per year in 2017. Since 2017, he has invested in the hotel business.
