Early Life
Mustafa Rahmi Koç was born on October 9, 1930, in Ankara, Turkey. He is the only son of Vehbi Koç, the founder of Koç Holding, one of Turkey's largest conglomerates. Koç attended Robert College in Istanbul and later studied industrial management at Johns Hopkins University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Rise to Success
After completing his military service, Rahmi Koç began his career at Otokoç Company in Ankara in 1958. He then moved to Koç Ticaret in 1960, representing the Koç Group in Ankara. In 1964, he became the general coordinator of Koç Holding after its headquarters moved to Istanbul. He became chairman of the executive committee in 1970 and deputy chairman of the board in 1975. Rahmi Koç was appointed chairman of the Koç Holding management committee in 1980. He took over as chairman of the board of directors on March 30, 1984, succeeding his father, Vehbi Koç, and held this position until April 4, 2003, when he retired and became the honorary chairman of Koç Holding.
