Early Life
Richard Sands was born in 1951, and grew up in a family with a deep history in the wine and beverage business. His father, Marvin Sands, founded Canandaigua Wine Company in 1945, the precursor to what would become Constellation Brands. This early exposure laid the foundation for Richard's future career. He earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of Vermont and a Master's degree and Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina.
Rise to Success
Richard joined the family business in 1979, starting a career that would span over four decades. He took on various leadership roles, including President and COO, before being appointed CEO in 1993, and Chairman from 1999 to 2018. Under his leadership, Constellation Brands underwent significant growth, expanding its portfolio through strategic acquisitions and partnerships.
Key Business Strategies
One of the key business strategies under Richard Sands' leadership was the relentless acquisition of premium brands. Notable acquisitions include Robert Mondavi wines, Svedka vodka, and the U.S. rights to Grupo Modelo beers, including the well-known Corona and Modelo brands. These moves transformed Constellation Brands into a major player in the global beverage market. Sands also made a $4 billion investment in the cannabis industry with Canopy Growth in 2018.
Philanthropy
Richard Sands and his family have a long history of philanthropy, particularly in the Rochester, New York area, where Constellation Brands originated. In 2016, the Sands family made a $61 million donation to the Rochester Area Community Foundation, establishing the Sands Family Supporting Foundation. This donation was the largest in the foundation's history, and the foundation supports initiatives in the arts, education, and healthcare. Additional contributions have included a $1 million pledge to the University of Rochester's Simon Business School for classroom renovations and $13.5 million to the YMCA of Greater Rochester for a new facility.
