Early Life and Education
Sheryl Kara Sandberg was born on August 28, 1969, in Washington, D.C., and grew up in North Miami Beach, Florida. She excelled academically, graduating ninth in her class from North Miami Beach Senior High School. Sandberg pursued her undergraduate studies at Harvard University, where she majored in economics and graduated summa cum laude in 1991. She continued her education at Harvard Business School, earning an MBA with distinction in 1995.
Rise to Success
Sandberg's career began with a research assistant role at the World Bank and then as chief of staff to Lawrence Summers at the U.S. Treasury Department. She then transitioned to the tech industry, joining Google as Vice President of Global Online Sales and Operations. In 2008, she joined Facebook (later Meta) as Chief Operating Officer, a role she held until 2022. During her tenure, she was instrumental in making Facebook profitable and expanding its user base. She was also the first woman elected to Facebook's board of directors.
Key Business Strategies
As COO of Meta, Sandberg focused on the company's advertising business, which became a primary revenue source. She also oversaw the company's public relations and played a key role in managing various challenges, including those related to misinformation. Sandberg was also key in the growth of the company through its strategic direction and by acquisition of many companies.
Philanthropy
Sandberg is actively involved in philanthropy. In 2016, she renamed her Lean In Foundation to the Sheryl Sandberg & Dave Goldberg Family Foundation. She transferred roughly $100 million in Facebook stock to fund the foundation and other charitable endeavors. In October 2024, she donated $5 million through her charitable foundation to Marshall University for its 'Marshall For All' program.
