Early Life
Michael Polsky was born in Ukraine and immigrated to the United States in 1976 with his wife, starting with very little. He earned a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Kiev Polytechnic Institute and later an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business in 1987.
Rise to Success
Polsky's career began in the energy industry, working in power plant design. In 1985, he co-founded Indeck Energy Services, developing cogeneration projects. Though Indeck was successful, a partnership dispute led Polsky to start again. In 1991, he founded SkyGen Energy, specializing in gas-fired generators, which he later sold for a significant profit. In 2001, Polsky founded Invenergy, using his experience to develop and operate renewable energy projects on a global scale. Invenergy has become a leader in wind, solar, and natural gas power generation.
Key Business Strategies
Polsky's business strategy is driven by innovation and a focus on making renewable energy affordable and widespread. Invenergy's success stems from developing efficient and cost-effective projects, along with an ability to secure substantial investments and partnerships. The company focuses on technology, economics, and practical innovations, leading to the development of major renewable energy facilities.
Philanthropy
Polsky is actively involved in philanthropy, particularly supporting education and environmental causes. He established the World Resources Institute Polsky Center for the Global Energy Transition and the Polsky Energy Transition Leadership Academy at the University of Chicago, and endowed the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of Chicago.
