Early Life and Education
Mathias Döpfner was born on January 15, 1963, in Offenbach am Main, Germany. He pursued higher education in musicology, German literature, and theater science, studying in both Frankfurt and Boston. In 1990, he successfully obtained a Ph.D. in musicology from the University of Frankfurt. His father was a university professor of architecture.
Rise to Success
Döpfner began his career in journalism in 1982 as a music critic for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung supplement. His career continued to rise as he became editor-in-chief of the Hamburg tabloid Hamburger Morgenpost in 1996 and then editor-in-chief of Axel Springer SE's national daily newspaper Die Welt in March 1998. Döpfner's influence within Axel Springer SE grew further when he joined the management board in 2000 as the head of the newspaper division. In 2002, he was appointed CEO. In 2020, Friede Springer appointed Mathias Döpfner as her successor.
Key Business Strategies
As CEO, Döpfner initiated a two-stage digital transformation strategy, beginning in 2006, focusing on organic growth and digital acquisitions to transition the company towards digitization. By 2013, under his leadership, the company had total revenues of $3.9 billion. His success in building revenue from digital activities, from under $150 million to around $3 billion, helped earn the trust of controlling shareholder Friede Springer. In 2020 Friede Springer gave him a 15% stake in Axel Springer and sold him an additional 4.1%. He was awarded additional stock and now owns nearly 22%.
