Early Life
Manoj Dhamoo Punjabi was born on December 7, 1972, in Jakarta, Indonesia, to parents of Indian-Sindhi descent. His family's roots in the entertainment sector trace back to the 1940s when his grandparents immigrated from Sindh following the Partition of India. Growing up in Jakarta, Punjabi was inspired by his family's involvement in the entertainment business. He earned a bachelor's degree in marketing and finance from the Indonesian European University (now Esa Unggul University) in 1993.
Rise to Success
After graduating, Manoj Punjabi briefly worked in the pulp and paper industry before entering the family's entertainment business. In 1995, he joined Multivision Plus (MVP), a production house founded by his father Dhamoo Punjabi and uncles. He initially worked in administrative and supportive roles before advancing to production management. In 2002, he co-founded MD Entertainment with his wife Shania and his parents. MD Entertainment focused on producing Indonesian soap operas, which led to the company's establishment. The company officially launched in 2003, focusing on producing Indonesian soap operas, and has since expanded into feature films, music, and animation.
Key Business Strategies
Manoj Punjabi has been instrumental in growing MD Entertainment into Indonesia's largest media company. A key strategy was to produce high-quality films and television series that resonated with the Indonesian audience. Punjabi's production of the film *KKN di Desa Penari* (2022) became the highest-grossing film of all time in Indonesia, showcasing his ability to create culturally relevant content. He also led the company's acquisition of an 80% stake in the free-to-air broadcaster NET.TV (now MDTV Media Technologies) in 2024, integrating traditional television into the company's ecosystem. Tencent Holdings bought a 14.6% stake in MD Entertainment in 2021. This strategic move helped propel MD Entertainment to success.
