Early Life
Larry Tanenbaum was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1945 to a Jewish family. His grandfather, Abraham Tanenbaum, immigrated to Toronto from Poland and established a steel fabrication company, which later became a major business. Larry earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from Cornell University in 1968.
Rise to Success
Tanenbaum started his career in the family's construction business, Kilmer Van Nostrand Co. Limited, where he eventually became Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Under his leadership, Kilmer expanded into various sectors, including construction, real estate, and private equity. Tanenbaum's foray into sports began in the 1990s, with an effort to bring an NBA franchise to Toronto. He then acquired a stake in the Toronto Maple Leafs and was instrumental in acquiring the Toronto Raptors and Air Canada Centre, forming Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE). He currently holds a 13% stake in MLSE through his holding company Kilmer Sports Inc.
