Jerral Wayne Jones Sr. was born in Los Angeles, California, on October 13, 1942, and moved to North Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1945. His parents owned grocery stores. Jones was a running back in high school and co-captained the University of Arkansas's 1964 national championship football team. After graduating from the University of Arkansas, he became an executive vice president at his family's insurance company.
Rise to Success
Jones started an oil and gas exploration business, Jones Oil and Land Lease, which became successful, striking oil in 12 of his first 13 wells. He later purchased the Dallas Cowboys in 1989 for $140 million. Under his ownership, the Cowboys won three Super Bowls in the 1990s and became the most valuable sports franchise globally. He also diversified his investments into real estate, car dealerships, and hospitality, co-founding Legends Hospitality.
