Early Life
Marie Denise DeBartolo York was born in Youngstown, Ohio, in 1950. She is the daughter of Edward J. DeBartolo Sr., a construction magnate, and Marie Patricia Montani DeBartolo. York grew up in a family deeply involved in real estate development and business. She graduated from Saint Mary's College of Indiana in 1972.
Rise to Success
After graduating, she joined the family business, The DeBartolo Corporation, becoming its executive vice president. Following her father's death in 1994, she became co-chairman. In 1978, Edward DeBartolo purchased the Pittsburgh Penguins, and York served as president during their 1990–91 championship season, becoming the third woman to have her name engraved on the Stanley Cup. She assumed control of the San Francisco 49ers in 2000, after her brother, Edward J. DeBartolo Jr., relinquished ownership.
Key Business Strategies
Under York's leadership, the 49ers have focused on building a championship team while being committed to community engagement. She finalized the full takeover of the English soccer club Leeds United in 2023. York has overseen the development of Levi's Stadium, the 49ers' home, contributing to the team's off-field growth.
