Early Life
Gayle Marie LaJaunie was born on January 26, 1947, in New Orleans, Louisiana. She grew up in the Algiers neighborhood and attended Catholic schools, graduating from Martin Behrman High School in 1966. Before her involvement in professional sports, Benson developed a career in interior design.
Rise to Success
Benson's professional life took a significant turn when she married Tom Benson in 2004. Tom Benson, a successful businessman who owned numerous auto dealerships, banks, and real estate holdings, had purchased the New Orleans Saints in 1985. Following Tom Benson's death in March 2018, Gayle inherited the New Orleans Saints of the NFL and the New Orleans Pelicans of the NBA, becoming the first woman to own both a team in the NFL and NBA.
