Early Life
Kjell Inge Røkke was born on October 25, 1958, in Molde, Norway. He began his career as a fisherman at the age of 18, working on Norwegian vessels. Without any formal education beyond high school, Røkke showed early determination and entrepreneurial spirit.
Rise to Success
In 1979, Røkke moved to the United States and worked on trawlers in Alaska. He saved enough money to purchase his first fishing vessels, eventually becoming the owner of the American Seafoods Group. During the 1980s, he operated American Seafoods and Resource Group International (RGI) in Seattle, which included brands like Brooks Sports and Helly Hansen. In the mid-1990s, he returned to Norway and acquired a major stake in Aker ASA through RGI, becoming its largest shareholder in 1996. The merger of RGI and Aker ASA was completed in January 1997.
Key Business Strategies
Røkke's strategies involved strategic acquisitions, particularly in the fishing and offshore industries. He is known for his ability to identify opportunities and build businesses. His most notable achievement is building Aker ASA into a significant industrial investment company with interests in oil and gas, maritime assets, and marine biotechnology. Røkke is the main owner and chairman of Aker ASA, holding a substantial ownership stake.
Philanthropy
Røkke and his wife, Anne Grete Eidsvig, joined The Giving Pledge in 2017, committing to donate a significant portion of their wealth to charitable causes. He has supported ocean research and clean-up efforts through the REV Ocean Foundation. He also founded Stiftelsen VI (The VI Foundation) to advance opportunities for people with disabilities.
