Early Life
Odd Reitan was born in Trondheim, Norway, on September 11, 1951, to Ole Reitan and Margit Aarhaug, who operated a small grocery store. Growing up in this environment, he gained early exposure to the retail industry, learning about inventory management, customer interactions, and business operations.
Rise to Success
Reitan began his entrepreneurial journey in 1972 by opening AS Sjokkpris, a discount grocery store, in Trondheim with his father. This venture focused on offering low prices to attract customers. In 1979, he launched the REMA 1000 chain, inspired by efficient, low-cost franchise models. The chain quickly expanded throughout Norway and later into Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia, becoming a leading player in the Scandinavian and Baltic grocery markets.
Key Business Strategies
Reitan's business model prioritized operational efficiency and low prices. Key strategies included a limited product assortment, streamlined supply chains, and high-volume purchasing. The franchise structure of REMA 1000 allowed for rapid expansion while maintaining centralized purchasing and branding. The Reitan Group's success also involved strategic diversification, including real estate and convenience stores.
Philanthropy
In 2012, Odd Reitan established the annual "Årets Ladejarl" award to recognize individuals demonstrating exceptional value-based leadership and contributions to societal well-being. The prize includes a cash grant of approximately $180,000 USD to the recipient.
