Early Life and Education
Steven M. Rales was born on March 31, 1951, in Bethesda, Maryland, to Norman Rales and Ruth Abramson. He grew up with three brothers in a Jewish family. He graduated from Walt Whitman High School in 1969. Rales then attended DePauw University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1973. He furthered his education by earning a Juris Doctor degree from American University in 1978.
Rise to Success
Rales, along with his brother Mitchell, co-founded Danaher Corporation in 1984. The company started as a real estate investment trust but pivoted to industrial manufacturing. Under Steven Rales's leadership as CEO from 1984-1990 and chairman since inception, Danaher grew significantly through strategic acquisitions. He co-developed the Danaher Business System, which drove the company's growth through numerous acquisitions and operational improvements. In 1995, the Rales brothers also co-founded Colfax Corporation, focusing on industrial pumps.
Key Business Strategies
Danaher's success is attributed to the Danaher Business System (DBS), a lean manufacturing and continuous improvement framework that fueled growth through acquisitions. Danaher acquired over 400 companies and expanded into various sectors, including life sciences, diagnostics, and environmental solutions. Rales also invested in the film production company, Indian Paintbrush, which has produced several acclaimed films.
Philanthropy
Rales is a significant philanthropist, primarily through the Indian Paintbrush Foundation. In 2021, he donated $1.5 billion in Danaher shares to the foundation, increasing its endowment to $2.2 billion. The foundation focuses on education, healthcare, and medical research.
