Early Life and Education
Steven M. Rales was born on March 31, 1951, in Bethesda, Maryland. He was raised in a Jewish family. His father was a businessman and philanthropist. Rales graduated from Walt Whitman High School in 1969. He then attended DePauw University, graduating in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1978, he earned a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from American University.
Rise to Success
Rales began his career in his father's real estate firm. In 1979, he co-founded Equity Group Holdings with his brother, Mitchell Rales. The brothers acquired various businesses. In 1984, they founded Danaher Corporation, a global conglomerate, with Steven as chairman. Danaher's success was driven by the Danaher Business System, which focused on operational excellence. Rales is also the founder of Indian Paintbrush, a film production company established in 2006.
Key Business Strategies
Rales and his brother focused on acquiring underperforming companies and improving their operations. Danaher acquired more than three dozen companies. They implemented the Danaher Business System to drive efficiency and growth. In 2024, Rales acquired film distribution companies Janus Films and the Criterion Collection.
Philanthropy
In 2021, Steven and his brother transferred Danaher shares worth more than $1.5 billion to their charitable foundations. Rales was also a major donor in the 2002 dedication of the Peeler Art Center at DePauw.
