Early Life
Guilherme Benchimol was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1976. He initially dreamed of becoming a professional tennis player, competing in his youth. However, he chose a different path. He studied economics at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. After a brief experience in a brokerage firm, he decided to venture into the financial market.
Rise to Success
In 2001, at the age of 24, Benchimol co-founded XP Investimentos with Marcelo Maisonnave in Porto Alegre with an initial capital of around $2,000. The company started with a focus on financial education, aiming to demystify investing for everyday Brazilians. XP rapidly expanded, acquiring several financial information portals and brokerage firms, including Clear and Rico. In 2017, Itaú Unibanco acquired a 49.9% stake in XP, a transaction valued at over R$6.3 billion.
Key Business Strategies
Benchimol's strategy centered on education, an extensive network of independent financial advisors, and the embrace of technology. XP offered free seminars and courses to attract clients, expanding the investor base. By 2019, the company had over 3 million active customers and more than $130 billion in custody. XP's IPO on NASDAQ in December 2019 marked a major milestone for Brazilian fintech.
Philanthropy
Benchimol launched the XP Institute to offer free education to 50 million Brazilians over the next 10 years.
