Grigory Berezkin was born on August 9, 1966, in Moscow, Russia. He graduated from Moscow University with a degree in Petrochemistry in 1988. He continued his studies, completing postgraduate work and defending his dissertation in 1993. From 1991 to 1994, he worked as a junior researcher at Moscow State University.

Berezkin's business career began in the 1990s, with his early ventures including the founding of the Slavyanka company, which later became the basis for the Seventh Continent supermarket chain. He later met Roman Abramovich, and in 1994, under Abramovich's patronage, Berezkin became the deputy general director of Komineft and its general representative in Moscow. He then transitioned into the energy sector. He built his fortune through energy trading, particularly with his company Rusenergosbyt. Berezkin sold a significant stake in Rusenergosbyt in 2006 to Enel, an Italian energy conglomerate.
