H. Lawrence "Larry" Culp Jr. was born in March 1963 and raised in the Washington, D.C., area. He is the son of a small welding company owner. Culp earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Washington College and later obtained an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Culp's career began at Danaher Corporation in 1990, where he worked at the subsidiary Veeder-Root. He became President of Veeder-Root in 1993.
