Early Life and Education
German Borisovich Khan was born in Kyiv, Ukraine, on October 24, 1961. He is of Ukrainian Jewish descent. His father was a professor of metallurgy. Khan graduated from high school in 1978 and worked as an apprentice. He then studied mechanical engineering at the Kyiv-Pedagogical College, graduating in 1982. Khan also studied at the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys (MISIS), graduating in 1988.
Rise to Success
After graduating from university, Khan began his career in the business world. He co-founded the Alfa Group Consortium with Mikhail Fridman and Alexei Kuzmichev, becoming a key figure in the company's growth. Khan played a crucial role in Alfa Group's oil subsidiary, TNK (Tyumen Oil Company), and was involved in forming TNK-BP in partnership with British Petroleum (BP). He held executive positions at TNK-BP from 2003 to 2013. In 2013, he co-founded LetterOne (L1) to invest in international projects.

Khan's business strategy has focused on identifying and capitalizing on opportunities. He has been involved in commodities trading, the oil trade, and financial investments. A significant deal for Khan was the sale of TNK-BP to Rosneft for $56 billion in 2013. He later co-founded LetterOne to invest in the international oil and gas sector.
