Early Life and Education
German Borisovich Khan was born on October 24, 1961, in Kyiv, Ukraine. His father was a professor of metallurgy, which sparked Khan's early interest in engineering. He graduated with honors from a college specializing in manufacturing and technology. Khan furthered his education at the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys, graduating in 1988. During this time, he met Mikhail Fridman and Alexei Kuzmichev, who would later become his partners in Alfa Group.
Rise to Success
After graduating, Khan entered the business world at the height of the cooperative era. He co-founded Alfa-Photo in 1988 with Fridman and Kuzmichev. In 1989, the trio established Alfa-Eco, a commodities trading outfit, which eventually grew into the Alfa Group Consortium. Khan played a crucial role in Alfa Group's expansion into various sectors, including banking, oil, and telecommunications. A key achievement was his leadership in Alfa Group's oil subsidiary, TNK (Tyumen Oil Company). He served as executive director of TNK-BP from 2003 to 2013, making it Russia's third-largest oil company. In 2012, TNK-BP was sold to Rosneft for $56 billion, and Khan earned around $3.3 billion from the deal.
Key Business Strategies
Khan's success stems from strategic investments and a hands-on management approach. He focused on the export and oil trade, acquiring stakes in major companies. A significant deal was the joint venture with BP, forming TNK-BP. Khan's ability to navigate complex negotiations and build strong relationships was crucial. He co-founded LetterOne (L1) with Mikhail Fridman to invest proceeds from the sale of TNK-BP.
Philanthropy
Khan is actively involved in philanthropy, supporting various charitable programs. His philanthropic endeavors include supporting charitable programs for sick children, Jewish initiatives, and the creation of a Holocaust memorial in Ukraine. He is a co-founder of the Genesis Philanthropy Group, which aims to develop and enhance Jewish identity among Jews worldwide.
